Words by Annie Caligari, President - Isaacs Law Society, University of Canberra On the 29th of February 2012, the Isaacs Law Society hosted their annual Law Careers Fair at the University of Canberra in the brand new INSPIRE Building. The night was an opportunity for law students to meet with prospective employers and for the students to be able to ask questions and get real life answer from those in the legal industry. With a huge turnout of over 60 students the night was a huge success! A highlight of the evening was our guest speaker for the event, Noor Blumer, President of the ACT Law Society, who gave a very informative and entertaining talk on the trials and tribulations of working your way up in the legal world!
The INSPIRE Building was a great venue for this particular event as it provided multiple use of spaces for industry to set up and a separate function room for the guest speech so that students could depart from the main activities and have an intimate talk about the reality of the employment world after a law degree. Law firms that attended the night included Clayton Utz, Maurice Blackburn and Farrar, Gesini & Dunn. Public Departments included the Prime Minister & Cabinet, Department of Public Prosecutions and the Australian Federal Police. We were also joined by the College of Law and the ANU Legal Workshop, both graduate study option for law students wanting to practice law.
The Law Careers Guide 2012 was also distributed amongst the students at the Law Careers Fair. The Careers Guide includes lots of valuable information for law students of all year levels: whether it be ‘how to write a resume’ or even searching for graduate employment. It also includes contact information for all local firms, government departments and community legal centres. The Careers Guide has multiple memoirs released each year from past UC law graduates for students to see the different paths their own peers have chosen after their studies at university. All in all, it was a very successful evening with the biggest turn out of law students the Isaacs Law Society has ever seen. We would like to send a big thank you out to all those who helped organise this event and the INSPIRE Building which proved to be the perfect venue for what was a fantastic event!
